清咸豐初年，山西喬家大東家喬致廣經商失敗，不幸病逝。原本趕往太原參加科舉考試的二少爺喬致庸被緊急召回，接手處理大哥所留下來的爛攤子。這時家門外一片鬧哄哄，全都是聞風趕來擠兌銀子的股東和商家。管事的曹掌櫃就算說破了嘴，也難以平息眾人的不安情緒。喬致庸萬萬想不到，曾經富甲一方的喬家，如今窮到只剩下三千兩現銀。就在這樣的危急時刻，他毅然決然動用僅剩資金，大張旗鼓地為大哥辦理喪事，撐住場面，爭取到一點緩衝時間。然後再靠著抵押祖宅，獲得資金，埋下了未來復興家業的一線生機。
